Fans are always saying that Sony needs to sprinkle some of its Spider-Verse magic on its live-action Marvel movies, and it looks like the studio was trying to do exactly that on the next one to go before cameras. Unfortunately, the film in question has been pulled from the schedules thanks to long delays combining with the writers’ strike, but there’s still a chance it could go ahead and pull off this intriguing crossover.
Sony has officially removed El Muerto from its January 2024 release date, which suggests the Bad Bunny vehicle about the little-known luchador-themed Spider-Man villain could end up being permanently shelved. However, as IndieWire has explored, the truth is less cut-and-dry than that. Sony’s plans for the film, set to be directed by Jonás (son of Oscar-winner Alfonso) Cuarón, are certainly ambitious, with two other names already attached to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Mandalorian‘s Mercedes Varnado — better known by her WWE stage name Sasha Banks — was eyed for the female lead while Marvin Jones III was in line to play the villain, Tombstone. Otherwise known as Krondon, Jones — who, like his character, is an African-American with albinism — happens to have already played Tombstone before in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
While there has been talk of Miles Morales venturing into the third dimension in the near future, with Shameik Moore campaigning to reprise his role, El Muerto bringing back Jones as Tombstone would mark the first time one of Spider-Verse‘s animated characters is brought to live-action. So it would be a pretty big step for a united Sony Marvel multiverse if this movie ever does get itself into the ring.
