Following a last-minute delay to production, filming on Sony’s star-studded Venom movie is now underway in Atlanta, where the 2018 spinoff joins other high-profile tentpoles in the vein of Avengers 4 and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Ruben Fleischer is calling the shots from behind the lens, but beyond the film’s core cast – Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate are all expected to star – there’s still much we don’t know about the Sony-backed project.
Situated outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we understand Venom has been angled as the opening chapter to Sony’s Spider-Man universe, while Lethal Protector, the six-issue comic book series that first hit store shelves in 1993, has been earmarked as a potential inspiration. Now, Omega Underground has unearthed another casting call that suggests a small portion of Venom will take place in Asia.
Word is Ruben Fleischer and Co. have cast the net in search of “villagers without modern haircuts,” though it’s unclear if these scenes will be set in the present day. Assuming Venom will feature flashbacks, there’s a chance Fleischer’s standalone pic will whisk viewers back through history in order to show the origin story behind the titular alien symbiote. Perhaps it’s a government conspiracy gone awry? Or something much more sinister?
Whatever the outcome, Omega Underground later noted that said flashback could involve one of the homeless people that Eddie Brock (Hardy) is protecting, as Venom recently issued a call for extras to play “San Francisco homeless” for a couple of night shoots. Granted, it’s unclear if the two casting calls are connected.

Directing from a script penned by Kelly Marcel (50 Shades of Grey), Fleischer’s Venom movie is expected to launch into theaters on October 5th, 2018, and when it does, it’ll use motion-capture CGI to render the titular alien symbiote. So similar to how Topher Grace’s performance was captured in Spider-Man 3, then.
