Cast your mind back to December of 2017 and you may recall an interview with Simon Kinberg in which the writer-director spoke candidly about the failings of X-Men: Apocalypse.
Bryan Singer’s mutant misfire struggled to leave much of an impression – critically or commercially – though Kinberg vowed to make amends for Apocalypse with Dark Phoenix, the 2019 prequel based loosely on Chris Claremont’s legendary comic book.
And yes, despite rumors to the contrary, it’s still on course for a release in February of 2019 – the same corridor once occupied by Black Panther, no less – and Jean Grey herself, Sophie Turner, has offered up some new intel about X-Men: Dark Phoenix and why it’s shaping up to be a big departure from the doom and gloom of Apocalypse.
This movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded. There are, of course, those supernatural elements, but this one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero.
The Game of Thrones actress also addressed the current situation regarding Dark Phoenix‘s reshoots, and while she’s still a little confused by the whole ordeal, she’s expected back in Montreal over the coming weeks to capture a “few bits and bobs” so that Simon Kinberg is able to call a wrap on his 1990s-set X-Men movie.
And though 20th Century Fox has been keeping mum about Dark Phoenix, leaked theater merch recently gave us a better look at Kinberg’s ensemble as they’ll appear in the cosmic epic. Spoilers: there are yellow costumes galore.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hope to right the wrongs of Apocalypse when it descends into theaters worldwide on February 14th.
