Back in March of this year, Instagram artist BossLogic brought us an impressive tableau that recreated Da Vinci’s The Last Supper mural with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and associates. Of course, since then, Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters, and about half the inhabitants of this image were erased from the MCU (if only temporarily), prompting BossLogic to offer a far more despondent update of his previous work.
If you compare the two images below, you’ll notice that the new version is a lot more sparsely populated in the wake of Infinity War’s genocidal conclusion, not to mention the various deaths that occurred in the lead-up. On top of that, the imagery is a lot more shadowy this time around, giving a grimly ironic edge to the “TEAMWORK” and “REVOLUTION” posters.
While the signal-less TV in the background also serves as a welcome nod to the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp, the most mournful part of the whole piece just might be Tony Stark smack-dab in the middle, seemingly overcome with grief. On the lighter side, however, at least Stan Lee can try more of Thor’s potent Asgardian drink from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
All in all, it’s a pretty sad sight, but in the MCU, there’s a reason for everything, and so the Russo Brothers have recently outlined their thinking behind the dusting of each superhero who fell victim to Thanos’ snap.
“In terms of our choices about who Thanos would end up eradicating with his snap, you know it was very story focused. How do we pay off each individual character’s storyline most profoundly? The first person to go is Bucky Barnes, and it’s shot from Captain America’s perspective. You know we’re watching Cap go through the experience of watching him go away. We’re watching Okoye, whose number one mission in life is to protect the king. She watches the king go in front of her. To see those characters react in those situations is very powerful and resonate.”
The sorrowful conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War did indeed resonate with fans, but don’t be too surprised if many of the characters absent from this image make a return in Avengers 4, which will be out in theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
