The DC Extended Universe is in a fragile state right now. After striking out with both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad (critically speaking, at least), Warner Bros. needs a hit. Thankfully, they’ll have two chances to turn things around this year, as Wonder Woman and Justice League are coming our way. Admittedly, there have been some very concerning reports about both in recent weeks, but a new test screening for the former is yielding some positive news.
This past weekend, the studio showed off the film to a test audience and while they were all asked to sign an NDA, one person has now broken it, revealing an awful lot about what’s to come. Of course, it’s best to take this stuff with a pinch of salt, as nothing here has been confirmed by any official source, but from what we’re hearing, this is what we can expect with Wonder Woman….
First of all, we’ve learned that those early reports calling the movie disjointed and a mess were accurate. The key word being ‘were,’ as it was certainly struggling to come together at one point. However, it was apparently a “salvageable mess” and the studio was able to find a “good movie” within the early rough cuts. Not only that, but those who’ve seen it already are calling it a “dark” film that’s “good, if not great.” Justice League is also mentioned, with reports saying that it too is a mess, but like Wonder Woman, it’s “salvageable.”
***Minor spoilers to follow***
We’ve also heard a bit more about the plot of Patty Jenkins’ upcoming blockbuster today, with the report noting that the movie will have a framing device where Diana is emailing Bruce Wayne from Paris. The latter is trying to get her to join the Justice League, and through emails, the titular hero tells him about her past, which includes “meeting her first love, Steve Trevor, and how she ended up fighting in World War I, a war that was caused by Ares.”
That’s what makes up the bulk of the film, and by the end, “she tells Bruce that she has re-found her faith in humanity after losing Trevor and fighting in the war, and that she is willing to join him in the Justice League and help find other Meta Humans.” While it’s unknown if we’ll actually see Affleck show up as Bruce, he has been rumored to cameo for a while now and this new report only further supports that, so we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him make an appearance.
***End spoilers****
Take this as you will, but it’s certainly interesting and doesn’t sound too far-fetched. Of course, it’s best not to put too much stock into anything that comes out of test screenings, as we’ve learned in the past, but if nothing else, it’s nice to hear that Wonder Woman was able to pull through in the end, and that Justice League will (hopefully) do the same.
With a new trailer for the former set to arrive in theaters with Logan this weekend, we should get a better of idea of what’s in store for us very soon, but until then, take to the comments section down below and let us know your thoughts on this intriguing new report.
