The sequel’s final sequence features a jaw-dropping revelation, telling us that the Nick Fury and Maria Hill we’ve been watching throughout the movie haven’t actually been the real Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Rather, they were Skrulls the whole time.

The twist was a huge one, as fans wondered whether this was implying that Fury had always been a Skrull. After all, the presence of Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos as his stand-in suggested that the shapeshifter might’ve been filling in for the former S.H.I.E.L.D. chief ever since the 1990s.

However, Far From Home director Jon Watts has now clarified to ComicBook.com that the intention with the scene was to reveal that the Fury of this movie alone was a Skrull, confirming that Nick’s brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame, for instance, was the real deal.

“First of all, to clarify the timeline, that’s real Nick Fury at Tony’s funeral at the end of [Avengers: Endgame], So it’s not like he’s been a Skrull forever or like, it’s not like he’s been a Skrull since Captain Marvel.”

The post-credits sequence in question reveals that Talos has been impersonating Fury on the big man’s authority. When he reports back to him, we discover that the actual Fury is on some kind of space station which is manned by Skrulls. Fans believe this could be the introduction of the MCU’s version of S.W.O.R.D., the cosmic counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D. We’ve previously theorized that this is probably a set-up for Captain Marvel 2 as well, along with a reference to “Kree sleeper cells” on Earth.

By the sounds of it, then, we shouldn’t expect a Secret Invasion-esque storyline just yet. Though Watts’ comments certainly don’t rule out the idea that other characters out there aren’t really Skrulls in disguise…
