Love or loathe it, Star Wars: The Last Jedi became the final geek-friendly blockbuster of 2017, closing out the year that was with a stellar box office performance – $1.2 billion and counting.
And in keeping with tradition, renown filmmaker and comic book scribe Kevin Smith has now delivered his own verdict of Rian Johnson’s sci-fi sequel, not to mention the hate and vitriol that ensued. Indeed, part of Smith’s exhaustive review included a sliver of speculation, as the esteemed director postulated about the future of Star Wars and, more specifically, Episode IX.
With no title to call its own – that we know of, mind you – J.J. Abrams’ trilogy-capper is still very much in the formative stages of development. But with a 2019 release date in place, the wheels are already in motion, and Kevin Smith is of the belief that Lucasfilm will use Episode IX to destroy a Star Wars relic, as it looks to complete the transition between one roster of characters and another.
Brace yourself, folks, because Smith predicts an early demise for the Millennium Falcon. Yes, the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy may be blown to pieces come 2019, and though it’s merely a hunch, The Last Jedi is living proof that Lucasfilm isn’t opposed to killing off its major characters.
Via Fatman on Batman:
I think it’s the Falcon. That would really rip all of our hearts out. And, at the same time, the legacy cast is gone, maybe they don’t necessarily — if it’s a big enough story beat, I bet you that’s what goes.
Now that The Last Jedi is out in the wild, J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio (Justice League) will begin work on Star Wars: Episode IX ahead of its arrival on December 20th, 2019. Sandwiched in between those two titans is Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Ron Howard-directed anthology film that’s all set to unveil its maiden trailer. Keep your peepers peeled.
