With the exception of Rian Johnson’s subversive The Last Jedi, family has been an ongoing theme in the Star Wars episodes, and according to a new leak, Star Wars: Episode IX could be continuing this tradition with an afterlife reunion.
After Luke Skywalker passed away in his last movie, J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel will see Mark Hamill reprising his role at least one more time, and understandably, many are assuming that the character will be taking Force Ghost form. But if this report from Express is anything to go by, he may not be the only Skywalker to take this ethereal form, as the late Jedi will supposedly share a scene with his father Anakin.
Apparently, Luke’s ghost will be witnessed “standing in a cave with many floating white orbs” when he encounters the former villain of the original trilogy. It’s also said that this version of Anakin will be “a fusion of Hayden and Sebastian Shaw,” allowing for a take that will be “familiar to both prequel fans and original trilogy fans.”
Honestly, that last part in particular sounds pretty silly, with its suggestion that not only are there a substantial number of fans familiar with the prequels but not the originals, but that the best way of throwing them a bone is through a weird synthesis of the two actors. Aside from that, however, there’s little here that you can’t imagine making it into next year’s release, even if this is nothing more than an unfounded rumor.
Of course, this report is just the latest in several leaks which allege scenes for either Force Ghost Luke or his old man Vader, but we’ll find out how Abrams really intends to bring this saga’s latest trilogy to a close when Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20th, 2019.
