It’s no secret that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is absolutely going to destroy the box office this weekend. It could very likely be the highest grossing film of all-time, especially as it’s being universally praised by critics. In fact, already J.J. Abrams’ movie has made over $100 million in pre-sale tickets. That’s more than any other film in history.
To put into perspective just how staggering that number really is, look at the previous record holder for pre-sale tickets: Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. That made $25 million in pre-sale tickets, $75 million less than The Force Awakens. And, $100 million isn’t even the final number. Analysts say that it could easily grow to $120 million before the film hits theatres.
[zergpaid]Opening weekend estimates put the new Star Wars at somewhere between $180 and $220 million. Again, though, with the glowing reviews, I’d say that it will end on the higher side of that scale. Jurassic World currently holds the record with $208 million, so all eyes are on Disney to see if they can beat Universal’s behemoth.
Whatever ends up happening this weekend at the box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to make a ridiculous amount of money, and whether it breaks the opening weekend record or not, it’s already cemented itself as one of the best films of the year and the Star Wars movie that fans of the franchise have been waiting years for.
