Supreme Leader Snoke may be comparable to Emperor Palpatine in that Andy Serkis’ humanoid alien has been angled as the ultimate big bad of Disney’s current Star Wars saga, but whereas the prequels outlined every step of Palpatine’s rise (descent?) into Darth Sidious, Rian Johnson has vowed to exercise some restraint when it comes to Snoke and his place in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
What we do know, though, is that he’s the master puppeteer pulling the strings behind the First Order – the modern incarnation of the Galactic Empire, essentially – and prefers to command his troops from afar. That’s a strategy we saw unfold in The Force Awakens, when Snoke relayed instructions via a floor-to-ceiling hologram.
Turns out the villain has been housed up in his Mega Star Destroyer, the Supremacy, all along, but everyone involved in the film has assured us that he’ll have a much more prominent role to play in The Last Jedi – something which was made very evident in that last full-length trailer. Still, despite his increased presence in the sequel, we shouldn’t expect to have all the answers once the credits roll. Which is to say that even when the film ends, we may not know who exactly Snoke really is.
As such, speculation has been running rampant across the four corners of the web, with everyone furiously trying to guess just who this big bad might be. At the moment, no one seems to have cracked the case, but a new fan theory puts forth a very intriguing idea. That being, what if Snoke is actually the first Jedi? The evidence for which comes from the photo in the gallery below.
As you can see, a new image from Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary shows an emblem on the floor of a ruined Jedi temple and though it’s hard to make out exactly what it’s showing, it’s easy to spot the similarities that it shares with Snoke’s distinct physical appearance. What’s more, though, is that the description for the emblem describes it as the “Prime Jedi, the first of the Order.”
Convinced yet? Just imagine how epic that’d make the fight between Luke and Snoke – a battle between the first Jedi and the last. You have to admit it’d be an awesome twist and would have huge ramifications for the franchise moving forward. For now, we’ll keep this filed in the speculation cabinet, but it’s certainly intriguing and thankfully, we don’t have long to go before we get some answers.
That’s because after having been introduced to audiences back in 2015, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will finally herald the moment when the lid is peeled back on Snoke. Expect that and much more to occur when Rian Johnson’s sequel opens big on December 15th. How big, you ask? Try a $200m-plus opening weekend in North America.
