“Kylo failed you. I won’t.”
Set aside all those preconceptions and fan theories of Rey wandering over the dark side for just a moment and feast your eyes on the ominous new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
First uncovered by ComicBook.com, it’s another tantalizing tease of the adventure to come, as Rey pledges her loyalty to Luke Skywalker aboard Ahch-To. Believed to be the site of the first Jedi Temple, the far-flung oceanic planet has been like a second home for Mark Hamill’s jaded Jedi, who clearly has his suspicions about Rey after he watched his Jedi Academy burn at the hands of Ben Solo (AKA Kylo Ren). “I’ve seen this raw strength once before. It didn’t scare me then…it does now.”
And though he has every right to be wary, up above you’ll see Daisy Ridley pledge her sword (or should that be lightsaber?) to the cause, followed by the real action shot: Rey powering up her weapon as the rain falls on Ahch-To.
It also draws a light between both sides of the Force – and, by effect, Rey and Kylo Ren – as the footage cuts to a close-up shot of Adam Driver’s mercurial villain. Seen clutching onto his iconic helmet, it looks like Snoke’s apprentice will question his own motives when The Last Jedi slams into theaters next month, which will surely come to a head when he crosses paths with his estranged mother, Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).
Going one step further, expect the film’s most emotional scenes to be amplified by Fisher’s passing, while we understand that Rian Johnson and Co. have included a fitting tribute in the sequel’s credits to immortalize Carrie Fisher, the people’s princess.
And it’ll all unfold when Star Wars: The Last Jedi touches down on December 15th.
