Sound the klaxon! Steven Soderbergh’s stop-start directorial career is set to continue with top-secret project Logan Lucky, and there’s casting news coming straight from the Croisette.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Riley Keough of The Girlfriend Experience has closed a deal to join Soderbergh’s mysterious feature. Indeed, the casting coup marks a reunion for Keough and Soderbergh, given the latter was attached as executive producer on Starz’s promiscuous escort drama.
But after dabbling with a number of projects in a producing capacity, Logan Lucky will mark Steven Soderbergh’s first foray into directing since Side Effects in 2013, and even though the filmmaker himself remains coy on the somewhat unsurprising change of heart, Filmnation is currently in attendance at Cannes to sell international rights.
Plus, with Keough all but set to star, Soderbergh’s cast is coming together really rather quickly. In light of today’s announcement, the actress will star opposite Channing Tatum and Michael Shannon, who headline the racing drama as a pair of brothers who “plan a heist during a high-profile NASCAR race.” No details were given relating to the addition of Keough, but it’s quite the premise for Soderbergh to tackle nonetheless, and it’ll be interesting to see whether the director will steer the project more toward action or drama. Gregory Jacobs, Mark Johnson and Reid Carolin are among those producing.
It’s (almost) official: Steven Soderbergh is returning in the hot seat for Logan Lucky, and we can surely expect more details to emerge over the course of the week-long film festival.
