Steven Spielberg-Tom Hanks Cold War Thriller Now Called Bridge Of Spies

Production on Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' forthcoming project has been simmering for some time, away from the prying eyes of the rest of the world. The movie tells the story of a lawyer, James Donovan (Hanks) enlisted by the CIA to negotiate the safe return of a U.S. pilot, Francis Gary Powers, shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960. The catchy working title of "Untitled Cold War Project" has now been wiped away, as the movie's official monicker has been unveiled.

Production on Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ forthcoming project has been simmering for some time, away from the prying eyes of the rest of the world. The movie tells the story of a lawyer, James Donovan (Hanks), enlisted by the CIA to negotiate the safe return of a U.S. pilot, Francis Gary Powers, who was shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960. The catchy working title of “Untitled Cold War Project” has now been wiped away though, as the movie’s official monicker has been unveiled.

In an interview with The Daily Pennsylvanian (via /Film), producer Marc Platt said: “I have a film directed by Steven Spielberg starring Tom Hanks coming out called Bridge of Spies.” Simple, to the point, and concise. However, this may, of course, change before the movie hits theaters in October. During production it was referred to as St. James Place, so we may see another amendment before a definite title is settled upon.

That being said, Bridge Of Spies does strike as a fitting name. It refers to an actual bridge that linked East and West Germany together prior to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. It was termed the ‘bridge of spies’ as it was frequented by US and Soviet intelligence teams.

Co-starring Alan Alda, Amy Ryan and Mark Rylance and written by the Coen brothers, Bridge Of Spies will arrive in theaters on October 16, 2015.
