The writers’ room of Stranger Things took to Twitter to add their two cents to the ongoing debate on who should star in a live-action Miles Morales movie.
The official Stranger Writers account tweeted a portrait of Caleb McLaughlin, who stars as Lucas Sinclair on Stranger Things, along with the caption, “May we suggest…” in response to a tweet announcing that a Miles Morales film was in the works.
Many MCU fans hope to see McLaughlin play young Spider-Man in the Earth-1610 timeline. However, there is also some resistance to his casting due to concerns about misrepresentation and the lack of opportunities for actors from underrepresented groups. One Redditor pointed out that McLaughlin is older than Morales and expressed their view that his age might make him less believable in the role.
Another fan agreed, underscoring the potential issues with McLaughlin’s ethnicity and age if he were to portray Morales. Instead, they suggested casting Afro-Latino actor Miles Brown in the role.
Another Redditor found the original tweet tone-deaf, pointing out that McLaughlin has openly stated that the role should go to someone from the same ethnic group as the character.
Actually, what McLaughlin said was that he would relish the change to play the part. He said he appreciates Morales’ Afro-Latino heritage and believes he has what it takes to play the role.
McLaughlin continues to dream aloud about his desire to land a superhero role. In addition to his interest in playing Miles Morales, he told Heroes Comic Con Belgium 2022 that he also had another comic book figure in mind.
“I want to do a superhero film. I would love to play Static Shock honestly.”
The casting of Miles Morales continues to ignite intense discussions among fans and creators about how to create the best content. Fans are making compelling arguments, and while McLaughlin understands and respects them, he is confident that he can do justice to the role. Ultimately, the studio will decide the winner of this debate.
