Welsh actor Craig Roberts has joined the cast of 22 Jump Street, the highly anticipated sequel to 2012’s box office smash starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
The now 22 year old star of Richard Ayoade’s feature film directorial debut – Submarine (2010) – will join returning stars Tatum, Hill and Ice Cube, in his most commercial project to date. Details of his role – and indeed the plot of the film – are being kept tightly under wraps, although filming is reported to have already begun, with Wyatt Russell also in a supporting role.
22 Jump Street is the continuation of the story of two police officers specializing in investigations relating to young people. Each officer is selected for the squad because their youthful appearance allows them to pass themselves off as high school or college students – making undercover operations possible. 21 Jump Street was based on the popular TV series of the same name, which ran from 1987 – 1991, and helped launched the career of its star, Johnny Depp. Though there has been no synopsis yet released, it is rumoured that the new story will graduate from a high school setting to university.
In addition to the main cast, 22 Jump Street also sees the return of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, having recently finished helming duties on The Lego Movie. As with 21 Jump Street, this new story was also developed by Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, with newcomers Rodney Rothman and Oren Uziel helping Bacall with the overall screenplay.
With the expectation of box office success, 22 Jump Street has already been scheduled for release on June 6th, 2014 in the UK, and June 13th, 2014 in the US.
