David Ayer’s Suicide Squad adaptation has gained two new cast members in the form of Fury and The Longest Ride actor Scott Eastwood, and bodyguard-turned-boxer-turned-actor Ray Olubowale, known best as the Axe Man in the Resident Evil franchise. Who they are playing remains a mystery, but that hasn’t stopped the internet hype machine from jumping into full-on speculation mode.
Eastwood – the son of iconic actor/director Clint Eastwood – was first spotted in Toronto alongside Suicide Squad member Cara Delevingne and confirmed his involvement in an interview with Canadian news outlet eTalk. Some have already begun to speculate that Eastwood has landed a major role in the film, but frankly, there just aren’t many of those to go around at this point. It’s more likely that he’s landed a smaller supporting role, perhaps as a military figure or inmate from either Arkham Asylum or Belle Reeve prison.
Olubowale’s addition, on the other hand, could point to an exciting bit of casting for fans of DC Comics’ more outlandish rogues gallery. Rumor has it that the 6’7″ Nigerian-Canadian boxer could be taking on the role of King Shark. The homicidal, hulking humanoid shark was rumored to be in the film a few months ago, and has a prominent role in both the New 52 iteration of the team and the Batman: Assault on Arkham animated feature. He may be a bit hard to pull off in live action, but using an actor like Olubowale (and a healthy dose of prosthetics and CGI) would be a great place to start.
Of course, that’s just conjecture mixed with a bit of geeky excitement, so we’ll just have to wait and see what Ayer has planned.
Suicide Squad is gearing up for production at this very moment and is slated to hit theaters on August 5th, 2016.
