The numbers are in and David Ayer’s divisive Suicide Squad has set a new August record with its $132 million estimated opening this weekend. Hitting theatres in 57 international markets, the film managed to pull it together after negative reviews threatened to derail initial estimates, which predicted that the DC Comics adaptation could hit as high as $140 million.

With its impressive box office take, the film has set a new August record and completely blown Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $94 million opening, back in August 2014, out of the water. Additionally, the flick also set a record for IMAX’s best August start, with $7.2 million. Furthermore, it sits as Warner Bros.’ fifth highest bow, behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2Batman V SupermanThe Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Not bad for a film that’s getting pummelled by critics, right? Well, not exactly. If you recall, Batman V Superman also had a fantastic opening but experienced an enormous second week drop, leading to it underperforming at the box office when all was said and done. Unfortunately, it appears as if Suicide Squad is headed down a similar path. Admittedly, it didn’t cost as much to make as BvS and doesn’t need to hit quite the same numbers that Snyder’s film had to for it to be considered a success, but still, you have to wonder how it will ultimately do once its theatrical run is done.
