In the midst of all the movie, TV and comic book announcements and trailers dropping at San Diego Comic-Con, one aspect which I consistently look forward to most is that of the following year’s slate of DC animated films being revealed. If you’re like me, then you anticipate these babies just as much as any live action offering, as Warner Bros. Animation has a pretty good track record in this department.
As expected, the curtain was pulled back following the world premiere screening of Batman: Hush last night, and the first flick named is one that’ll make fans the world over stand up and cheer. Believe it or not, we’re finally receiving an adaptation of Superman: Red Son.
For those unfamiliar, this was originally published as an Elseworlds story written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Johnson. Basically, it explored what would’ve happened if baby Kal-El’s ship had touched down in Soviet Russia instead of Smallville, Kansas.
At the time of this writing, no voice cast has been announced, but we don’t usually learn such information until a few months prior to home video release. Regardless, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume more Elseworlds tales getting the animated treatment going forward, as Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was pretty solid in its own right.
Additionally, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War was touched on, but even less is known about that one. But when you consider how these movies have been building toward the return of Darkseid – especially in Reign of the Supermen – it’s most likely that Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok’s Darkseid War is the source material being looked at. This time around, however, familiar heroes will probably swapped out for John Constantine, Zatanna and others of that ilk. Well, Batman will probably be there, too.
As for the third movie making up the 2020 slate, that’ll be Superman: Man of Tomorrow, an original story centered on a young Man of Steel earlier in his career, and not based on any specific comic book. Coupled with the aforementioned Superman: Red Son, this assures that next year will be one to remember for Big Blue enthusiasts.
