Paramount Pictures has today unveiled a partnership with IMAX Entertainment to bring Alan Taylor’s soon-to-be-released Terminator: Genisys to the large-screen format.

The deal means that the sequel will be the first installment in the seminal sci-fi franchise to be screened in IMAX, with the studio making plans to digitally re-master the film ahead of its anticipated debut in July. In a statement, IMAX’s Greg Foster stated that Genisys, what with all its spectacle and CGI wizardry, is the perfect poster child for the big-screen experience.

“This film marks IMAX’s first foray into the Terminator franchise and we’re thrilled to be a part of it and team up once again with Alan Taylor and our friends at Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions. We believe it’s going to be a gangbusters summer at the movies next year, and Terminator Genisys is sure to be one of the season’s most anticipated movies for IMAX fans worldwide.”

For the uninitiated, Terminator: Genisys rips up the rulebook established by its time-travelling forebearers by introducing moviegoers to a somewhat unfamiliar Sarah Connor. In this iteration, Emilia Clarke’s heroine will have grown up in the shadow of Arnold Schwarzenegger T-800, rather than encountering the killer android at a later stage in life. And so, when Jai Courtney’s Kyle Resse is sent back through time to save her, it’s up to the trio to topple Skynet once and for all.

Terminator: Genisys is slated to arrive on July 1, when Paramount Pictures will bring the reboot to cinemas and IMAX theaters.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.
