Paramount has announced that Terminator 5, from Skydance and Annapurna Pictures, has been re-scheduled to July 1st, 2015.
Summer 2015 appears to be the biggest blockbuster season ever, so it is only natural for the movie studios to tinker with release dates as much or little as possible to get the most of the box-office.
Walt Disney Pictures started the machine by moving Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man from November to July 31st, 2015 and took Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales off the 2015 calendar completely. Then Universal Pictures also made their move when they announced that Jurassic World will be released on June 12th, 2015. Now it’s time for Paramount Pictures to play around with their biggest title of the 2015 season.
Nonetheless, it is an interesting move from the studio. Being only a five day shift, the title is re-scheduled from a weekend without major competition to one that already has two other big movies slated for release. Paramount will be going head-to-head with both Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2, a perfect fit for the holiday, and an untitled project from Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio that has brought us movies like the Despicable Me movies and The Lorax.
Apart from the release date, we don’t know very much about Terminator 5, aside from the fact that it’s being planned as the first of a new trilogy. Thor: The Dark World’s Alan Taylor is set to direct and screenwriters Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis are currently developing the script. That’s all we know for now though.
When we hear more we’ll be sure to let you know.
