Terrence Malick is a notoriously secretive and enigmatic filmmaker, keeping the plot and details of his films pretty close to the vest. So when we get just a single new image from his latest film, To The Wonder, from IndieWire, that is news in and of itself.
The still features Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko, looking happy and in love in what appears to be a European city. According to previously released information, we know that the movie focuses on the seasons of love, charting Affleck and Kurylenko’s relationship as he moves through his life and reconnects with a woman from his past (Rachel McAdams).
Javier Bardem is co-starring as a priest from Kurylenko’s home country, and numerous other actors were set to co-star, but have apparently been cut for one reason or another.
To The Wonder played at Venice and is having its North American premier tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival. Early buzz is typical for a Malick film – which is to say admiringly mixed – but I cannot wait for this film to hit, if only because I’m excited that Malick seems to be on a bit of a creative roll lately.
Following the masterpiece that is The Tree of Life – which he apparently had been working on for 30 years – I’m eager to see what he can do in such a comparatively short timespan.
Wouldn’t you agree?
