Ready Player One director Steven Spielberg has been dropping hints of a new collaboration with Peter Jackson, while there’s also word that animated sequel The Adventures of Tintin 2 remains alive and well.

Word comes by way of The New Zealand Herald (via The Playlist), where Spielberg spoke about a mysterious future project while doing press rounds for The BFG.

When it comes to Tintin 2‘s development status, Spielberg pointed to Peter Jackson’s all-consuming work on The Hobbit trilogy to explain the lack of tangible progress, but there appears to be another, separate project brewing between the two filmmaking greats. Sadly, Spielberg stopped short of revealing what that movie could possibly be.

“Peter was so busy with The Hobbit that it took him away from Tintin and he’s doing another film for my company now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that he’ll do Tintin.”

Reports indicate that said collaboration could spell a revival of Dam Busters, Peter Jackson’s WWII drama and remake of the 1955 film of the same name. Another possibility is that Jackson and Spielberg could be nurturing a smaller project in the vein of, say, Heavenly Creatures.

However that may be, Steven Spielberg’s The BFG releases across cinemas and IMAX theaters today, July 1, in North America. As for Peter Jackson, the New Zealand filmmaker hasn’t stepped behind the lens since closing the book on his Middle-earth saga with Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. Could The Adventures of Tintin 2 court the director back onto the scene sooner rather than later?
