You know things have gotten bad for The Flash when it should be treated as a victory that it failed to steal an unwanted all-time box office record away from Morbius, but the DCU’s disastrous blockbuster is taking any victory it can get at this stage.
Of course, there is the requisite bad news to report after a $15.3 million take saw the multiversal movie drop by 73 percent in its second weekend to set the steepest-ever decline for its franchise, way out in front of the 69 percent that was previously shared by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
On the plus side, that means it hasn’t matched or exceeded the 74 percent plummet that Jared Leto’s infamous introduction to “A New Marvel Legend” endured, although it does place it second on the list in terms of every comic book adaptation ever made. Look, trying to put a positive spin on anything relating to The Flash and its cursed run in theaters is getting harder by the day, so let’s just allow Warner Bros. and DC Studios to have this one.
At this rate, the Scarlet Speedster’s solo debut will top out with a cumulative run somewhere in the $110-120 million range, which is awful. On a global scale, $300 million is beginning to look out of reach, which will also cement The Flash‘s reputation as one of the biggest money-losers in Hollywood history.
The pressure is on for not just Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but James Gunn’s reboot, too.
