If James Gunn is to be believed, then The Flash could end up being the high point of this year’s superhero movie slate. We suppose any film that puts the ill-fated DC Extended Universe out of its misery is worth that sort of shout, but given that The Flash is further armed with mind-shattering stakes and a pair of surefire powerhouses in Sasha Calle and Michael Shannon, this is one movie that just might walk the walk as well as it’s been talking the talk.
Gunn, of course, has confirmed a solo film – Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – as one of the projects in the first chapter of his incoming DCU, and we can only hope his love for The Flash is an omen for Calle’s continued inhabiting of the role; a possibility the actress herself would be far more on board with than one would already think.
In a recent interview with Muses of Media, Calle divulged her love for Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic run (which Gunn’s project just so happens to be based on), noting how the heroine’s penchant for superpowered shenanigans never undercuts the very real, human emotions, such as grief, trauma, anger, and unconditional love for one’s dog, that she contends with over the course of the story.
Indeed, the stage could not be set any more perfectly; Gunn loves The Flash, Calle plays Supergirl in that movie, Calle loves Woman of Tomorrow, and Gunn’s Supergirl is based on Woman of Tomorrow. If destiny doesn’t rear its head on this one, it will be a tragedy for the ages.
The Flash will release in theaters on June 16.
