Following Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla reboot in 2014, the production company that started it all is having another bash at the iconic monster. Toho Pictures’ upcoming Godzilla: Resurgence finds the towering beast returning home, with the film set to unravel on Japanese turf. We’ve already had a sneaky glimpse at the figure in question when a teaser dropped last year, and now Toho has dropped a full-length trailer to further stoke our curiosity.
Unlike the US version, this attempt appears to be taking things back to the beginning. Whereas Gareth Edwards’ recent incarnation conjured up a CGI beast, Resurgence is kicking it old school with a monster that looks like a guy in a suit. You won’t find any complaints from purists, as this is how Toho began its long-running tenure with the riotous monster.
As for now there’s no U.S. release date confirmed, but if it cleans up at the box office overseas, expect an announcement shortly thereafter.
Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Godzilla: Resurgence stomps into Japanese theaters on July 29th, 2016.
