Called upon when Rose Creek comes under threat from Peter Sarsgaard’s sadistic maniac and his bunch of thugs, the residents of that dusty old town – Haley Bennett’s grieving widow included – decide to fight fire with fire, recruiting Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and their crew of fellow sharpshooters.

Those familiar with John Sturges’ timeless classic, or indeed Akira Kurosawa’s seminal Seven Samurai, will have a fair understanding of what comes next, The Magnificent Seven stage an old-fashioned standoff with Sarsgaard’s goons, and once the action gets going – played against a cover of “The House Of The Rising Sun” – it’s hard not to become sucked up in the fun.

When the chips come down and the guns are drawn, Washington and Pratt will be rubbing shoulders with Ethan Hawke, Daredevil‘s Vincent D’Onofrio, Wagner Moura, Byung-Hun Lee and Luke Grimes.

Antoine Fuqua will rally his crew of hardened gunslingers when The Magnificent Seven marches into theaters on September 23. In the meantime, you can have a peek at the bloody new poster below, which evokes more than a few memories of a certain Hateful Eight.

Magnificent-Seven

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
