Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity – six brilliant residents of Ponyville who come together for a big, big announcement in today’s first teaser for My Little Pony: The Movie.
Arriving by way of Lionsgate, the animated pic is packed to the rafters with top-tier Hollywood talent, with Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber, Michael Peña (Ant-Man), Sia, Taye Diggs, Uzo Aduba, and Zoe Saldana poised to take point in the voice booth. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, there’s also word that Sia, the award-winning artist best known for “Elastic Heart” and “Chandelier,” has penned an original song for Jayson Thiessen’s picture, and we all know how lucrative these properties can be following the success of Paramount’s Trolls and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” last year.
Can My Little Pony: The Movie achieve a similar box office feat? There’s certainly a lot of similarities to be drawn between each animated pic – the all-star casting docket, the fall release window, even the beautiful burst of color – so we’re intrigued to find out how audiences take to Thiessen’s reboot.
“A new dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6 – Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity – embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship and save their home.”
Also starring Andrea Libman, Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Tabitha St. Germain and Cathy Weseluck, My Little Pony: The Movie trots out of Equestria and into theaters on October 6th, at which point Lionsgate’s animated pic will square off against Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 for box office supremacy. It’ll be courting a completely different portion of the audience, of course, not unlike how Trolls opened under the shadow of Marvel’s Doctor Strange back in 2016.
