Remember how barely a week ago there were rumblings of internal talks at Marvel regarding the resurrection of the MCU’s old guard to renew interest in what has, frankly, been a hit-and-miss franchise post-Endgame? The final trailer for The Marvels is already steering into that.
It hasn’t quite made any promises, but its opening moments did lean quite heavily on the heroes that have come and gone – with archival footage of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) underpinning a monolog about the need for heroes by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
While a quick trip down memory lane is always nice, the trailer still has an uphill battle ahead of it to convince Marvel enthusiasts (past or present) to get off their couches and head to theaters this weekend. We quickly get up close and personal with Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), the film’s big bad who manages to rip a hole in space, causing a different reality to bleed into the MCU. Where have we heard that before?
We then see Carol Danvers take a big, deep breath, before going off to do her usual routine of zipping around the cosmos blasting baddies. All the while, we continue hearing Fury plead with her to take part in “one last fight,” while on-screen text pleads with the audience to “be there for the moment that changes everything.” Oh, and Valkyrie shows up to share a few words as well.
The title card at the end of the two-minute video, quite boldly has the beloved Avengers theme playing over the top of it — implying some truly massive stakes. Jaded and disenfranchised with the MCU as this writer may sadly be, I sincerely hopes The Marvels can deliver something as spectacular and earth-shattering as this trailer promises.
Still, while box office projections and hype for The Marvels has been lukewarm at best thus far, this final peek at the upcoming Brie Larson-led sequel is really laying it on thick with hinting at massive revelations for the multiverse, that even fans who have understandably dropped off the Marvel train won’t want to miss.
The Marvels is tearing its way through the multiverse and into your local theater this Friday, Nov. 10.
