Ominous Teasers For The New Mutants Continue To Big Up The Film’s Horror Element

Fox spinoff The New Mutants has dropped two ominous teasers via Twitter, teasing Wolfsbane, crucifixes and the sins of our past.

Now that Hugh Jackman has bid farewell to the X-Men franchise and Wolverine, 20th Century Fox is slowly gearing up for a brand new chapter in its elaborate mutant saga. Out with the old and in with the new, as the old saying goes.

It’s a venture that will see the launch of an X-23 spinoff under James Mangold and Craig Kyle, the author behind Dafne Keen’s Laura, along with a Drew Goddard-directed X-Force movie. Filming on that one is expected to commence late next year – or early 2019, as Josh Brolin cautioned – by which point Fox will have launched three high-profile tentpoles onto the big screen: Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and The New Mutants.

Out of that tantalizing trio, The New Mutants has caught our eye for its bold horror elements, not to mention the A-list cast of up-and-coming talent. Both were on full display during that unnerving first trailer, which released to coincide with Friday the 13th earlier this month – how very fitting. Turns out The New Mutants Twitter feed has been dropping follow-up teasers ever since, and we’ve included them below for your viewing pleasure:

They’re more a pair of haunting .GIFs than anything else, but the nightmarish imagery – the crucifix, the dead bird lying next to an old-fashioned window – is enough to drive home the point that, yes, The New Mutants will be unlike any other X-Men film before it.

And it could be the first in a brand new trilogy of movies, according to director Josh Boone, who presides over an ensemble cast that includes The Witch breakout Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin/Magik), Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane), Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball), Alice Braga (Dr. Cecilia Reyes), Henry Zaga (Roberto da Costa/Sunspot), and Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage).

The New Mutants will become the new kids on Fox’s block once Boone’s horror-themed spinoff scurries into theaters on April 13th, 2018. And yes, that’s a Friday, too.
