Although it’s currently still showing in theaters all across the world, having found a home on the big screen since April, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be migrating to home entertainment soon enough. It broke box office records to become the third highest-grossing (currently) animated movie of all time, losing out to Frozen II and The Lion King remake from 2019.
The combined efforts of Nintendo, Universal and Illumination brought us a faithful adaptation of the immensely popular Super Mario and Super Mario Bros. franchises, featuring some of the most iconic video game characters ever created. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic shared directorial duties, while the ensemble cast consisted of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key and Jack Black, among others. The movie acts as the origin story for plumber brothers Mario and Luigi, who find themselves sucked through a magical pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach, who finds herself at odds with the Koopas, ruled by Bowser.
On a $100 million budget, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already grossed $1.3 billion and counting. That’s a mind-blowing figure, considering how animation is becoming something of a dying breed in the world of Hollywood. After the complete critical and commercial failure of 1993’s Super Mario Bros. movie adaptation, Nintendo were reluctant to pull the trigger on a second attempt, but it absolutely paid off to roll the dice, as the statistics show.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released on digital download on May 16, 2023. And now, it’s scheduled for a DVD and Blu-Ray release on June 13, 2023. After just one week of release, it became the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made, as well as the first movie based on a video game to gross $1 billion worldwide.
And you’ll soon be able to enjoy it from the comfort of your home — and keep it forever.
