More characters in the Mario franchise have received their time in the spotlight in the third and final Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, but not in the way that you expect, unless you’re familiar with the Super Mario lore.
During the first scene in the newest trailer, Luigi was lowered down in a cage inside a lava dungeon. Surrounding him were the penguins that were featured in the first trailer, and another newly introduced character. It was a Lumalee, a Luma from the Super Mario Galaxy games. But despite how this little creature looks, this adorable Luma is actually incredibly morbid. This little Luma is fascinated with death, which shocked everyone trapped in the dungeon.
Here’s the thing: Lumalee was always like this. In the Super Mario Galaxy games, Lumalee liked to talk about death and how there is no escape. Lumalee was actually a shop in the games. Not a salesperson, a literal store where the player can purchase one item per encounter.
Despite the game selling over 12 million copies, not everyone knew this morbid fact about this adorable character. So don’t be surprised when people are shocked about how dark and twisted this cute and adorable star-like character is. Regardless, people immediately fell in love with this Luma’s personality.
Lumalee was hinted to be part of this Nintendo film early on thanks to a Japanese McDonald’s Happy Meal advertisement. Lumalee was part of the set’s second wave, which also included Mario in his kart, Luigi, and Bowser. While this newest trailer confirms that Super Mario Galaxy will be referenced in the film, it’s currently unknown if Rosalina would also be included.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released on April 5, 2023.
