Skynet is gearing up for its long-rumored hard reset.
My Entertainment World (via Omega Underground) brings word that Tim Miller’s untitled Terminator reboot, the first in a “three-film reinvention,” is poised to enter production in the spring.
Produced in collaboration with James Cameron, a bona fide veteran of the series who promises to “revamp” The Terminator for the 21st century, both Spain and Budapest have been earmarked as potential locations, which tells us that Skydance’s sixth entry into the illustrious franchise could be prepped and ready for a summer 2019 release.
Only Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are on the casting docket – for now, at least – though last we reported, James Cameron stressed his desire to “hand off the baton” to a new generation. Think of how Star Wars handled its transition from one era to the next and you’ll begin to get an idea of Cameron’s line of thinking.
Story-wise, The Terminator‘s actual plot remains locked away in the Skydance vaults. What we do know is that it’ll retcon all of the events that transpired in Genisys, Salvation and Terminator 3 – such is the beauty of branching timelines – so that only T1 and T2: Judgement Day are considered canon.
Here’s what Cameron had to say in a previous interview:
This is a continuation of the story from Terminator 1 and Terminator 2. And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse. This was really driven more by [Tim] than anybody, surprisingly, because I came in pretty agnostic about where we took it. The only thing I insisted on was that we somehow revamp it and reinvent it for the 21st century.
Not for the first time, Skydance is angling The Terminator to be the first in a new trilogy. Whether this all pans out will be told in time, but with Cameron, Hamilton and Schwarzenegger all on board, fans can at least look forward to a blast from the past. July 26th, 2019 is the current target.
