Today’s brought good news for you Asgardian enthusiasts out there. Thor 4 has essentially been officially confirmed to be on its way, as The Hollywood Reporter has shared a story claiming that Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi has signed a deal to write and direct a fourth adventure for the God of Thunder. But does the fact that this movie is happening prove that Chris Hemsworth won’t be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
Following the hilarious “Asgardians of the Galaxy” scene at the end of Avengers: Endgame, fans assumed that Thor hitching a ride on the Benatar with the Guardians meant that he was now one of the team and would appear in their upcoming threequel. When asked if this was happening, the Endgame filmmakers played coy and said it was all up to GotG‘s James Gunn. Hemsworth himself, though, said he’d be down for playing Thor in the movie.
THR’s report, however, makes no mention of Hemsworth showing up in Guardians 3. This doesn’t necessarily mean anything, of course, as the article focuses on the Thor films not the Guardians franchise. However, the piece implies that Thor 4 is coming soon as Waititi may have to put his Akira movie with Warner Bros. on hold to return to Marvel. As THR says, “the two projects’ production dates began to bump up against one another.”
Akira was supposed to release in May 2021, meaning it would likely have started shooting in 2020. Now, it seems as if Thor 4 will go before the cameras around the same time instead. Likewise, all signs point to Guardians 3 filming next year, too, following Gunn’s completion of The Suicide Squad. So, if Thor 4 and Vol. 3 are shooting at similar times, it might not be logistically possible for Hemsworth to appear in both. Maybe we can still hope for a cameo, though?
