So much criticism is directed at Star-Lord for his callousness that few have stopped to consider the God of Thunder’s big blunder – rather than using Stormbreaker to kill Thanos immediately, Thor plunges the cosmic axe deep into his enemy’s chest, giving him just enough time to activate the stones and reduce half of all life in the universe to dust.
That is, in a nutshell, the incredibly grim finale of Avengers: Infinity War. But had things panned out differently, and Thor had gone for the head, co-director Joe Russo believes everyone’s favorite Norse god would’ve stolen the show, as his hero’s journey formed a huge part of the overall story.
Not only that, but it picked up the pieces from Thor: Ragnarok, which essentially stripped the MCU veteran down to the bare bones – no Odin, no Asgard, and definitely no hammer. If only he had listened to Thanos and gone for the head…
I think he’s been on a very complicated journey where he struggles with his ability to feel worthy and be worthy. I think he’s looking for a moral compass in his life. What we love about him in Infinity War is that he has been torn down to his essential parts and he goes on on a hero’s journey which a very underdog journey for someone of his stature because he has lost everything in his life.
Joe Russo even went so far as to suggest that Avengers: Infinity War belonged to Thor Odinson, right up until the moment when he let his deep-seated thirst for vengeance get the better of him – remember, Thanos ordered the killing of Loki and Heimdall during the film’s opening moments.
Via Wired:
In a lot of ways he is the driving hero’s arc of the movie which stands in direct opposition to Thanos’ argument. I would argue that head for chopped his head off at the end of the movie that the movie will belong to Thor but because he didn’t it belongs to Thanos.
If it’s more Avengers: Infinity War coverage you’re after, look no further than the extended blooper reel of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes sharing a giggle between takes. Not to mention that the film is now available across Blu-ray and DVD and comes packing tons of extras.
