In 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker let out his dark side, and the results were almost unbelievably goofy. But thanks to this new GIF posted to Reddit, Tobey Maguire’s strut through New York has been given a sinister new context, intermingling this footage with the genocidal climax of Avengers: Infinity War to suggest that Emo Peter was a lot more dangerous than we gave him credit for.
In the Sam Raimi film, Peter’s affected by an alien symbiote, causing the web-slinger’s personality to take a turn for the evil as he engaged in such malevolent deeds as eating too many cookies, dancing like a dork and apparently killing off MCU characters with the mere snap of his fingers. Once Peter rids himself of this parasite, the symbiote passes on to a certain Eddie Brock, resulting in a live-action Venom that even the movie’s producer isn’t too fond of.
Forming the other half of this GIF, meanwhile, are the deaths of several of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Maguire’s own Spidey successor Tom Holland. Though the MCU Peter, along with half the universe, seemingly perished after Thanos’ deadly finger-snap, the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home makes it clear that we haven’t seen the last of this version of the wall-crawler. And while some fans have speculated that the Spider-Man: Homecoming follow-up will be a prequel to Avengers: Infinity War, previous statements from the movie’s producers strongly suggest otherwise.
We’ll find out if and how the new Peter recovers from his dusting when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd, 2019. After that, Holland will be coming back for Spider-Man: Far From Home, which comes out on July 5th of the same year.
