It’s been in development hell for years at this point, spouting nine kinds of rumors and speculation as to whether Tom Cruise would ever suit up once again as the best-in-class Naval aviator, Lt. Pete Mitchell. But finally, Top Gun 2 has been cleared for takeoff, and it’ll soar into theaters bearing the title Top Gun: Maverick.
As far as the plot goes, we understand that the pic will tackle the technological clash between fighter pilots and drones, with the new technologies on the verge of rendering the human pilot obsolete. Obviously, this is bad for Maverick, who lives for the thrill of soaring through the skies and engaging in thrilling dogfights. You could even say he feels the need for speed, and that’s pretty apparent in this new batch of set pics.
Seen below, the shots feature Cruise riding his motorbike, rocking the classic aviators and bomber jacket and of course, looking super cool while he does so. They don’t reveal too much about the film itself, but it’s nice to see the actor getting back into the swing of things regardless.
Of course, the Mission: Impossible – Fallout star is all set to reprise the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who’s now become a flight instructor after his maiden voyage back in ’86. We imagine he’ll be barking orders at a slew of new recruits in the sequel, though beyond that and what we mentioned up above, Paramount hasn’t revealed a whole lot about the story of the next chapter in the Top Gun saga.
Still, we know that Maverick has already assembled an incredible cast, which boasts A-listers such as Jon Hamm and Westworld star Ed Harris, who will be appearing alongside Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Thomasin McKenzie, and Val Kilmer’s inimitable LT Tom Kazansky – better known to you, I and the cadets of the NAS Miramar base as the Ice Man.
You can catch them all on the big screen when Top Gun: Maverick takes flight on June 26th, 2020.
