Throughout his illustrious career, Tom Cruise has proven himself to be a master of almost every talent.
He can thrive in drama even though he doesn’t do it anywhere often enough, he’s got charisma and screen presence for days, his comedic chops have often been underrated, and he is of course Hollywood’s most high-profile daredevil that loves nothing more than to risk life and limb in the name of our entertainment by way of the jaw-dropping stunts that have become his signature.
However, as anyone to have witnessed his performance as Stacee Jaxx in the widely-panned musical Rock of Ages can surely attest, one thing he can’t do very well at all is sing. Naturally, Cruise spent five hours a day with a vocal coach in preparation for the part, but it would be fair to say that not all turds can be polished.
Thankfully, though, the actor and producer was only kidding when he rattled off his list of accomplishments at the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One that including driving, piloting, skydiving, and dancing, before offering to the crowd that Part Two would be heading down the musical route.
As thrilled as audiences are to watch Cruise hurl himself from impossible heights and run headlong into the face of danger, the fact Rock of Ages – which was heavily marketed to those unfamiliar with the Broadway original on the novelty of seeing him try his hand at a musical for the first time – the fact the movie bombed at the box office highlights that maybe he’s better off sticking to what he knows.
