As you surely know, there’s quite a lot going on with the Spider-Man property right now. Of course, Peter Parker himself is swinging around the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his next appearance set to be in Avengers: Infinity War. Beyond that, though, we’ve also got some stuff coming down the pipeline from Sony. Namely, Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
From what we understand though, there’s not set to be any kind of connection between the two. After all, the latter is animated while the former is live-action. Not to mention that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are working on Into the Spider-Verse, have already confirmed that it’ll be its own thing.
So, it was pretty surprising then to learn the other day that not only would Venom be showing up in the pic, but that Tom Hardy would be voicing him. Admittedly, it was an unsubstantiated rumor, with no real sources to confirm it, and sure enough, it’s now been debunked.
Sony has cleared the air today by reaching out to us to let us know that no, Venom will not be in Into the Spider-Verse, and neither will Hardy. While it would have been pretty neat if this turned out to be true, it just didn’t make sense and was really only a matter of time before the studio set things straight. It’s also worth noting that they squashed that rumor about John Krasinski having a role, too, which seriously calls into question how legitimate Fandom Wire’s scoops are, as they broke both stories.
As for what we can tell you about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with absolute certainty? Well, it features both Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as the titular hero along with Peter Parker in a mentor role. Beyond that though, and the fact that it swings into theaters on December 14th, details are still scarce.
Expect things to stay that way, too, as its release is pretty far out and Sony’s no doubt more focused on Venom at the moment. Once any further updates arise, though, we’ll be sure to let you know.
