Relativity has had some trouble getting their remake of The Crow off the ground. Several actors have been in talks for the lead role but so far, nothing has panned out. Bradley Cooper was attached for a bit and after he departed, the studio went to Mark Wahlberg. A few months ago we heard that Wahlberg turned it down and that James McAvoy was in talks to star. Now, we’re hearing that McAvoy has left the film and Tom Hiddleston is eyeing the lead role, that of Eric Draven.
Though not confirmed just yet, apparently Hiddleston has been talking to the producers and has already submitted a makeup test. The Wrap is reporting that the studio is very interested in having the actor come on board and they are hoping to close a deal soon.
For those unfamiliar with the property, it’s based on the 1989 comic book by James O’Barr. It follows “a man who’s murdered while trying to save his lover. He then comes back from the grave to avenge his own death.” The comic book was actually adapted for the big screen back in 1994 with Brandon Lee in the lead role. It was a pretty good film too, anchored by a fantastic performance from Lee and full of stylish visuals.
As for Hiddleston, he seems to be on a roll lately. He signed on for Capa earlier this week and of course, he still has his role in the Marvel universe as Loki. There’s no doubt that the Brit is an extremely talented and versatile actor and aside from Cooper, I think he’s the best choice yet for this film. Personally, I really enjoyed the 1994 version and am a bit skeptical of a remake. That being said, with Hiddleston leading it, I think The Crow could turn out alright.
