Lara Croft has found her new roomie in Ready Player One star Hannah John-Kamen.
Deadline brings word today that the actress has signed on to play the flatmate and close friend of Alicia Vikander’s title lead in MGM and Warner Bros. upcoming Tomb Raider movie. It’s currently lensing in South Africa, and we recently got a peek at the Oscar-winner decked out in full costume as the industry icon. Those familiar with Crystal Dynamics’ video game reboot may well have experienced déjà vu upon viewing those action shots, and that’s because Roar Uthaug’s (The Wave) is expected to mine inspiration from the critically-acclaimed, pixelated origin story.
As a result, expect a Tomb Raider movie that is much, much different to those featuring Angelina Jolie as the legendary archaeologist, and thanks to the reboot’s official synopsis, we know that Richard James Croft (Dominic West) will factor heavily into the story. Papa Croft has vanished without a trace, essentially, and his abrupt disappearance is enough to ship Lara off on a globetrotting journey, one which leads her to a remote island off the coast of Japan (Yamatai, perhaps?) where Alicia Vikander’s budding raider of tombs “journeys into the unknown.” Can we expect supernatural elements to permeate through the film’s plot?
Following today’s last-minute recruit, the Tomb Raider cast now includes Hannah John-Kamen, Daniel Wu, Dominic West and Walton Goggins as the primary villain. Little is known about his involvement, but we suspect he may have something to do with the disappearance of Richard James Croft.
Tomb Raider will hope to right the wrongs of video game movies when Roar Uthaug’s action-adventure pic storms into theaters on March 16th, 2018.
