Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft brought to life the video game goddess back in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Despite a sequel appearing two years later, it’s been quiet on the Croft front for some time. Now, some concrete news has landed! Variety have reported that Buffy The Vampire Slayer‘s Marti Noxon has signed on to pen the Tomb Raider reboot.
Noxon, who has worked primarily as a showrunner, has contributed to her fair share of features in the last few years. In addition to scribbling the Fright Night remake and I Am Number Four, she’s recently adapted The Glass Castle which has Jennifer Lawrence attached to star.
The story details for Tomb Raider are not public knowledge yet as it’s still being developed. It’s likely to include archaeology, adventure and guns strapped to muscly female thighs. It’s gathering steam now with a writer attached, but the big question is, who’s going to play Croft? There’s been a lot of support on Twitter for Captain America: The First Avenger star Hayley Atwell to take the role. The actress is in full support of the idea as she has been re-tweeting many of the suggestions.
The touted update has been on the cards with Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby originally given the scripting duties for Croft’s upcoming adventure. Earlier this year the most recent video game version offered a fresh take on the franchise by introducing a younger version of the leading lady. The project is being developed by Graham King, under his GK label. He bought the rights to the series after Paramount let them lapse. Sensing he was onto a good thing, he took Tomb Raider to MGM where it’s currently being prepped.
With the most recent videogame having shifted over three million copies, it’s likely that the film reboot will get moving pretty sharpish.
