The latter half of David Cronenberg‘s career has had an interesting shift. The man made his name with splatter and horror movies such as The Fly and Scanners. Nowadays, he’s going for edgy drama albeit with a slight exploitation edge. His new film looks to follow that trend with this very sexually charged trailer for his upcoming period drama A Dangerous Method.
Like usual, it looks to be a complete audience splitter. It focuses on the early relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, two of the eminent psychologists in the history of the profession. The film is written by Christopher Hampton, who adapted his play The Talking Cure for the screen and looks to have the same similar erotic and satirical pleasure that he brought to Dangerous Liaisons.
The film has a stellar cast leading cast with Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen playing Jung and Freud respectively. Also joining is Keira Knightley as Jung’s deeply troubled patient Sabrina, with whom he develops an affair. This marks Mortensen’s third collaboration with the Canadian auteur, having previously worked with him on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.
I think the trailer looks magnificent, with a brooding air of menace about it as well as something disturbing, this is creeping up as one of my most anticipated films. A Dangerous Method is set for release later in the year, presumably in time for some Oscar consideration. Watch the trailer below.
