With its December 18th release date quickly approaching, people were starting to wonder where all the promotional material was for George Clooney’s upcoming Oscar contender The Monuments Men. Yesterday, we finally saw some official photos and today, we have the very first trailer.

Aside from directing and starring in the film, Clooney has assembled an impressive cast which includes Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin and John Goodman. It’s hard to see how things can go wrong here with this type of talent involved and judging by the footage seen in the trailer below, I think we’re in for a fun ride.

The Monuments Men tells the true story of a “WWII platoon tasked with rescuing plundered art from the Nazis.” You can check out the official synopsis below:

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.  It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed?  But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

The whole thing has a bit of an Ocean’s 11 vibe to it, which I definitely like, and it seems like the film will be a lot more playful and light than some of the director’s earlier efforts, which is another thing that I’m happy with. Action, comedy, thrills and a great cast, it’s all here and overall, Clooney’s latest looks like a solid awards contender.

The Monuments Men opens on December 18th. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
