Having seen the first trailer for Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, it’s hard not to reflect on the cult favorite series. I mean, the franchise really has come a long way from the original picture that starred Kevin Bacon back in 1990. What started as a flick that toed the line between horror and comedy has now given way to five sequels, a TV series and even had its influence felt in Resident Evil CODE: Veronica when a familiar looking “Gulp Worm” showed up to confound the Redfield siblings.
Of course, one thing that’s kept the enduring saga fresh has been that of the ever-evolving Graboids. Really, even though it’s been years since I’ve seen the third movie in the series, I won’t soon forget those Ass Blasters. Sounding more like the title of an adult movie, these formidable monsters actually took flight by, well, shooting fire out of their asses.
As it turns out, the filmmakers have some surprises in store with the next installment, one of which we can say will be a treat for longtime lovers of the series. Granted, it may not sound earth-shattering to some, but it’s pretty cool to hear that we’ll be traveling back to Perfection Valley, a location not visited since 2004’s Tremors 4: The Legend Begins.
Teased by an image that stalwart actor Michael Gross posted on Facebook (seen below), he had this to lend to his fans:
“You CAN go home again! Been a few years, but Tremors fans will never forget Perfection and Chang’s Market. Revisit your old haunts with Burt Gummer and Jamie Kennedy in Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell.”
As for what lies ahead for Gross’ character of Burt Gummer, he and his son Travis Welker (Jamie Kennedy) “find themselves up to their ears in Graboids and Ass-Blasters when they head to Canada to investigate a series of deadly giant-worm attacks. Arriving at a remote research facility in the artic tundra, Burt begins to suspect that Graboids are secretly being weaponized, but before he can prove his theory, he is sidelined by Graboid venom. With just 48 hours to live, the only hope is to create an antidote from fresh venom — but to do that, someone will have to figure out how to milk a Graboid!”
Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital and On Demand on May 1 (pre-order here).
