After only four entries, the Underworld series will be getting a reboot courtesy of Lakeshore Entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Cory Goodman (Priest) is set to pen the script and Len Wiseman, who helmed the original Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, will be producing.

Plot details are scarce, but it’s being reported that the film might be titled Underworld: Next Generation and could focus on Eve, who is the daughter of the protagonists from the original series, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman). Not much else is known about the reboot other than that, but Beckinsale and Speedman are not expected to return.

The idea of rebooting Underworld will likely shock most, as the last film in the series, Underworld: Awakening, only hit theatres two years ago. It’s kind of crazy when you think about it, actually. It’s not like people are exactly clamouring for more Underworld.

Sure, Awakening pulled in a respectable $160 million at the box office, and the other films did decent business as well, but it’s only been two years since the last entry and like I said, it doesn’t seem like audiences are eager for more Lycan vs. vampire action. There’s also the fact that this series is mindless entertainment at best and boring, recycled trash at worst.

This is Hollywood though, folks, and since the Underworld franchise is still profitable, you can bet that those studio execs are going to milk it for all that it’s worth. Make no mistake about that.
