Unless he’s making a comedy, there’s one part of Superman’s legacy that won’t make it into James Gunn’s reboot

One of the major concerns longtime DC fans have about James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy – which are fairly unfounded given everything we’ve heard directly from the writer, director, and producer – is that he’ll apply too much of his comedic stylings to the upcoming reboot.

Filmmakers tend to be adaptable creatives – or at least the great ones do – so it’s not as if we’re expecting a laugh-a-minute romp in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad, although there’s guaranteed to be humor one way or another. Now that the casting process is heating up, the rumor will will only begin to spin faster, but we can at least rule out one aspect of Superman’s legacy that won’t factor into Superman: Legacy.

Responding to a technically accurate post that underlines just how broad the Man of Steel’s adventures have been over the years, Gunn could only react through the medium of emoji after it was pointed out that Kal-El has had some unusual interactions over the decades.

Would we love to see Superman discussing the vibes with a sentient automobile? Of course, we’re not monsters. Would it fit into Gunn’s wheelhouse for offbeat and bizarre humor? Yes, yes it would. Does that mean we should expect to see such bizarre and outlandish asides take pride of place when it comes to one of the most iconic superheroes of all-time being rebooted yet again? Probably not.

Of course, Gunn will be facing backlash right up until Legacy hits theaters in the summer of 2025, so the fears will linger nonetheless.
