Once the dust settled from Sony’s landmark announcement involving its own Marvel Universe, many questions were raised as to whether Ruben Fleischer’s Venom movie would stand on its own or, similarly to Spider-Man: Homecoming, be brought into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Or, in the words of Sony chief Amy Pascal, be an “adjunct” to the MCU.
Questions continued to swirl around the four corners of the web for a number of weeks, and the conflicting statements from both Marvel and Sony – specifically Kevin Feige and Pascal – only exacerbated an already confusing situation. Eventually, though, we received firm confirmation that Venom and its embryonic brethren (see: Black Cat and Silver Sable) will stand on their own, independent of the MCU.
So, after much back and forth, it seems that both parties are finally signing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to Venom, Spider-Man, and the two distinct cinematic universes to which they belong. But that hasn’t stopped those involved with the films from voicing their interest in some kind of crossover, and the latest to do so is the aforementioned Fleischer.
Speaking to the crowd in Hall H at Comic-Con earlier today, the director said that “it would be pretty amazing to see Venom and Spider-Man face off in a film.” But that’s not all, as he also teased that “at some point down the road,” he thinks Sony will find a way to bring Tom Holland’s Spidey into their franchise, while in a separate interview with CinemaBlend, Fleischer re-iterated his comments from the panel, saying that “any true fan of Venom would love to see him go against Spider-Man. So I have to think that’s gonna happen at some point.”
Of course, none of this is firm confirmation that Peter Parker will be swinging by for a rendezvous with Eddie Brock, but it certainly seems like something that’s at least on Sony’s mind. Though as the director says, if it were to happen, it would be at some point down the road, once the studio’s got their fledging cinematic universe up and running.
In other words, don’t hold your breath for a Spidey cameo in Venom later this year, but also don’t be surprised if he shows up in a future sequel.
