Vince Vaughn has signed on the dotted line to appear in Columbia Pictures next comedy, The Politician. The screenplay by Matthew Bass and Theodore Bressman made its way onto The Black List last year. It then became the subject of a bidding war, which hints that it might not be terrible.

From the title alone, the mind wanders to a series of set-ups and narrow escapes the titular chappie will no doubt find himself in. And there’s the rub with Vaughn. Certainly with Seth Rogen set to produce, and Michael Dowse (straight off the back of What if) on board to direct – it has potential. More often than not, the guaranteed box office haul of ‘big stars’ means projects with turgid scripts careen into production. If the fact that the screenplay was fought over means anything, it’s that it could be an above average chucklefest.

From THR, who broke the news, here’s the brief synopsis:

It tells of a politician in Washington D.C. who is caught in a scandal with some hookers. The man and his underachieving accomplice go on the run from the FBI, U.S. Marshals and a gang of drug dealers.

Sounds like it could be good fun, even cramming in the road trip go-to story crutch! With Rogen’s Grey Point getting involved in the production side, it stands to reason that The Politician could have legs to stand on. Director Dowse’s resume is evidence that he’s taken typical-sounding premises and turned them into quirkier offerings (Goon, It’s All Gone Pete Tong). Let’s hope that The Politician isn’t another run-of-the-mill comedy like Delivery Man or The Internship. Something along the lines of Swingers or even Wedding Crashers and you can consider us excited.

No release date has been revealed, but we’ll keep you posted with updates on The Politician.

Are you excited for another Vaughn outing? Or do you wish he’d don a costume and do a period drama? Let us know, as ever in the comments.
