Previous Spidey movies have taken place solely in New York City, but Spider-Man: Homecoming will change things up and take the wall-crawler to Washington D.C., where we’ll see him swinging around ferries, planes and even the freeway. The latest image from the reboot appears to hail from the Staten Island Ferry, and it looks like Spidey is on the hunt for some criminals.
In case you couldn’t already tell, Homecoming is going to take the beloved Marvel superhero in a very different direction and not just because it’s set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Jon Watts had this to say about delivering a new take on Peter Parker’s story:
“We’ve seen the Marvel Universe from the very dramatic penthouse perspective of Tony Stark; now we see what it looks like on the ground through the eyes of a 15-year-old. It’s still just one frame, one shot at a time. At the end of the day, it’s still just two hours, it’s still the fundamentals of storytelling even though the names are bigger and the budgets are higher. The same things that are important to a small movie are just as important on a big one.”
That sounds like a pretty perfect approach to the movie, especially as it comes so soon after The Amazing Spider-Man franchise launched (and quickly fizzled out). Sam Raimi’s trilogy stuck closely to the feel of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s early stories featuring the hero, and Marc Webb went down the Ultimate route as Sony looked to build their own shared universe. Watts, meanwhile, has had to come up with something that feels new and fresh while also making longtime fans happy as Spidey finally swings into the MCU. Has he succeeded? We’ll find out quite soon.
Circling back to this image though, and while it doesn’t reveal much, it’s definitely a cool shot and brings with it a very different feel than the character’s previous big screen adventures. It’s yet another promising piece of promotional material and with any luck, Spider-Man: Homecoming will live up to all the hype when it swings into theatres on July 7th.
