Yabba dabba doo! According to THR, Warner Bros. is reviving The Flintstones in the form of a new animated feature film to be produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.
When last we heard of the beloved “modern Stone Age family,” Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was set to produce a new TV series, but the project was tabled after his pilot failed to impress the studio. Now, Warner Bros. is turning to their animation banner, Warner Animation Group (which was behind The LEGO Movie) to bring the town of Bedrock to the big screen. Chris Henchy, who is partnered with Ferrell and McKay in Gary Sanchez Productions and co-wrote the script for Will Ferrell’s comedy The Campaign, has been hired to pen the screenplay for The Flintstones.
As someone who grew up watching re-runs of the immensely popular animated sitcom, I’m definitely excited at the prospect of seeing Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty back on the silver screen. Luckily, the studio is not attempting a live-action adaptation, which Universal tried and failed at twice, with the eponymous 1996 film and 2000’s The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas. The characters and world just don’t transfer well to live-action and I think that this film stands a much better chance of succeeding as an animated effort. I was also a huge fan of The LEGO Movie, so I’m anxious to see Warner Animation Group tackle another beloved property.
